Protect Your Hearing at Concerts & Reduce Your Noise Exposure

I went to many rock concerts in my teenage years and into my 20s with no hearing protection. That's a lot of events with hours of excessive noise exposure. To comprehend how loud concerts are, The University of Michigan Health states that a rock concert's average decibels (dB) can range from 120 to 129 dB. To put that in perspective, everyday conversations are around 60 dB, and power lawn mowers are about 90 dB. Noise above 85 dB is harmful, with how harmful being affected by how long and often you are exposed. In a workplace setting, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires employers to implement a hearing conservation program when noise exposure is at or above 85 decibels averaged over eight working hours, or an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA).

I'm 30 now, and I am a certified safety professional, so I understand noise exposure and how devastating hearing damage is. About two months ago, I decided to go to another concert! But this time, I wanted to protect my hearing. I found a product that claimed to reduce the Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) by 15 dB with an expected noise reduction by 21 dB. They have had their earplugs tested at a certified psychoacoustics laboratory for performance under the EPA guidelines mandated by 40 CFR Part 211, Subpart B.

The product was earplugs from the brand Eargasm. I used the Eargasm “Smaller Ears Earplugs” and my fiance used the “High Fidelity Earplugs” for the concert we attended.

Holding the “Smaller Ears Earplugs” with the box they come in. Not pictured is a small, aluminum cylinder container that is used to store the earplugs when not in use.

My review of the Eargasm Earplugs: They blocked out the loud noise levels, and the rock show was still clear to hear – the show was not muffled like the typical earplugs you would use in the workplace. They were very discrete as well. There were no big yellow or orange earplugs in my ears, but instead, they were small, clear earplugs. After the show, I went home with no ringing in my ears or muffled hearing. My hearing felt as if I did not go to a rock show where the average decibel level was around 112.5 dB from where I was seated in the venue (check out the app I use for a quick check of decibel levels – called Decibel X). My ears felt terrific! The following day, I woke up and had no muffled hearing or ringing.

It's safe to say that they worked for me and my fiance at the concert, and I am looking forward to using them in the future at other rock concerts. I loved them so much that I wanted to share them with you, so you could share them with your family and friends as a way to protect your hearing while enjoying the [loud] activities you love.
